A bit of this and that

Spring has not, in fact, sprung. It has gone back to winter: snow, wind, below 0 temperatures and everything. It is in the high teens in Athens however, which is where I shall be in less than two weeks, so I am looking forward to that very very much.

Two things of note since my last entry. Yesterday I went to another of Lyon's musuems: the Musée des Miniatures et Décors de Cinéma, which is exactly what it sounds like. It's in a very old building in Vieux Lyon, so part of the charm is the old stone and winding steps. There are a few interesting bits - I especially liked the movie stuff, which was quite heavily weighted on the science fiction side. However, miniatures can only capture my attention for so long. Everything was indeed very very small and you do marvel at how someone ever made it. But that can only last for so long.

A miniature library:
A very tiny ship in a bell jar:
This was super cool. It's a steam horse that can trot or gallop. The pot of hot water produces steam which goes up into the piston under the horse's croup. Steam even comes out of the nostrils!

The other big news of this week is that I got my first English tutoring job. It's with a family who lives in the 6th arrondissement. I'm helping two of their sons, aged 10 and 9, a half hour each on Wednesdays and Saturdays. So, today was my first day.*

I was very very nervous. Not so much about actually helping the boys. After all, I know English and I'm very confident in it. No, I was worried more about meeting the parents and introducing myself and making arrangements for payment, further lessons, details like that. So from Monday to Wednesday at 5 o'clock I was having fits of nerves. Of course, it all went well once I got there and really, I had nothing to worry about. I also know I'll worry just as much the next time I get a new client.

Here is my first 'paycheque' in France: the tenner I got for my one hour today. I'm moving up in the world!

*As of writing this, Wednesday was also my last day. M Dubard contacted me to cancel further lessons as they had decided on someone else.
